Artist Statement

The source of my artwork began from a childhood trauma that caused me to fold in on
myself. My father, a Navy pilot, made the ultimate sacrifice for the country. Grief stricken, I
didn’t speak or respond outside of my house for several years. It was my second grade
teacher, giving me paint and paper, that reconnected me to the outside world.

My knowledge base, for sculpture, is unique and I attribute it to three things. First, I
studied and performed dance, gaining first hand knowledge of the movement and limitations of
the human form. Secondly, my modeling and runway career gave me a strong sense of
silhouette and presence. Lastly, over a decade of working an ambulance as an EMT I was
steeped in anatomy.

I discovered clay, after decades of painting and creating beaded sculptures. With
muddy hands, paint, glaze, and beads I want to reach out to you. To remind you how alike we
are and of all the emotions it takes to be a human. I use the fat in the cheeks of the face, a tilt
of the head, the position of the body, or an overall color to relay my message. We all receive
hundreds these non-verbal messages a day, I invite you to stop and ponder this information.
